My Mother Says She Manifested Me Back From the Dead. I’m the Son She’s Talking About.

I’ve spent most of my life hearing the story from the other side. Here is what I actually think happened, what I don’t claim to know, and why being my mother’s most impossible manifestation has shaped the way I understand the Law.

There is something uniquely inconvenient about trying to have a measured opinion on the Law of Assumption when your mother believes you are alive because she refused to accept your death.

I am the son from the hospital story, and yes, I know how that sentence sounds. I know what my family says they were told that day. I know what my mother remembers doing after she was told I had been declared dead. I know what happened afterward, which is that I showed signs of life, survived, recovered, grew older, had a family of my own and eventually found myself writing an article about an event that I was technically present for but cannot narrate in the way everyone wants me to.

My mother's version of the story has barely changed. She was told her son was dead. She understood what those words meant. She did not misunderstand the seriousness of what was happening, and she was not standing in the hospital cheerfully pretending everything looked wonderful. She says she made a decision that contradicted everything she had just been told: her son was alive.

When people ask her what happened next, she has very little interest in making her answer intellectually comfortable for them. She says she brought me back.

I have always been more careful with that sentence than she is.

This has occasionally annoyed her.

My Grandmother Says She Brought My Dad Back to Life

My grandmother says a hospital declared my father dead, and that her refusal to accept it is the reason he is alive. This is the story I have avoided telling publicly, and the one I trust least to be repeated carelessly.
