My Grandmother Says She Brought My Dad Back to Life

There are stories in my family that I can tell casually.

Someone wanted a house and ended up with the house. Someone decided a business situation would reverse and watched it reverse. My parents’ relationship is its own ridiculous story. There are jobs, properties, money, people, opportunities and circumstances that have been repeated at family dinners so many times that nobody reacts to them anymore.

Then there is the story about my father dying.

That one has always belonged to a different category.

Partly because death changes the temperature of a conversation immediately. Partly because I know what happens the moment manifestation enters a story involving a medical emergency. People either become so skeptical that they stop listening, or so eager to believe that they start turning one family’s interpretation of an extraordinary event into a promise about what must be possible in every medical situation.

I want neither.

I am telling you what happened in my family, and more importantly, how my grandmother understood what she was doing while it happened. I cannot establish from this story that her assumptions medically caused what followed. I would never tell someone to substitute manifestation for emergency medicine, medical treatment, or a physician’s judgment.

But I also refuse to clean up the story to make it more comfortable.

Because my grandmother has never described what happened as hope.

She has never called it intuition.

She does not say she “had a feeling.”

She does not say she revised his death afterward.

If you ask her what she did, she says something much more disturbing in its simplicity:

“I brought him back.”
